And as of 2021, more than 130 cities replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day. Some states officially celebrate Indigenous People’s Day and others commemorate it through proclamations. If the commission determines that the person "fits these criteria" but does not remove the artwork, it "would be required to include in the plan steps it will take to install an explanatory plaque next to the work of art."
